Statement of Purpose
Complying with the BC Human Rights Code, our school’s code of conduct is as follows:
- to establish and maintain safe, caring and orderly environments for purposeful learning.
- to establish and maintain appropriate balances between individual and collective rights, freedoms and responsibilities.
- to clarify and publish expectations for student behaviour while at school, going to and from school, and attending school functions or activities at any location.
Conduct Expectations
Acceptable Conduct – Every child has the right to attend school and be safe and happy. We expect all Quadra students to conduct themselves appropriately. Acceptable conduct includes, but is not limited to:
- Respecting self, others and the school, as well as personal space and property. This includes clothing and footwear that conforms to health and safety requirements for the intended activity.
- Engaging in purposeful learning activities as expected.
- Being responsible, by being honest, fixing mistakes, and taking ownership of one’s decisions and conduct.
Unacceptable Conduct – We do not expect Quadra students to display behaviours or attitudes that discredit themselves, others, or the school. Unacceptable conduct includes, but is not limited to:
- Interfering with the learning of self or others
- Verbal or physical aggression or violence
- Bullying, harassment, or intimidation
- Racism, sexism, transphobia, homophobia
- Theft or damage to property
- Misuse of technology
Increased Expectations – As students become older, and more mature and move through the grades they will demonstrate increased personal responsibility, self-discipline, and consideration of others. If they demonstrate inappropriate behaviours, consequences will increase, as will the nature of their efforts at restitution.
Consequences – The response to unacceptable conduct is determined by considering factors such as the severity and frequency of the behaviour and the age and maturity level of the students involved. Additionally, special needs and Individual Education Plans will be taken into consideration.
Specifically:
- Responses to unacceptable conduct are pre-planned, consistent and fair.
- Wherever possible, disciplinary action is preventative and restorative.
- Wherever possible, students are encouraged to participate in the development of meaningful consequences and/or restitution for violations of the established code of conduct
All reasonable steps will be taken to prevent retaliation by a person against a student who has made a complaint of a breach of a code of conduct.
Notification – We have the responsibility to advise other parties of “serious” breaches of the code of Conduct which may include one or more of the following:
- parents of student offender(s)
- parents of student victim(s)
- school district officials – as required by school district policy
- police and/or other agencies – as required by law
- all parents/guardians – when it is deemed important to reassure members of the school community that school officials are aware of a serious situation or incident and are taking appropriate action to address it.
Cell Phones & Personal Digital Devices
A ‘personal digital device’ is a student-owned device that can be used to communicate or access the internet, such as a cell phone, tablet, smart watch, gaming device, and/or electronic toy. For the purpose of this document, earbuds and headphones connected to personal digital devices will also be restricted.
Equity must be considered when using and directing the use of personal digital devices in a manner that is culturally responsive and inclusive.
The use of personal digital devices is restricted during instructional hours to facilitate focused learning and promote online safety. It is expected that personal digital devices are always stored out of sight and on silent or airplane mode (this includes recess and lunch). Students are expected to follow protocols set by their school and/or teacher.
The use of personal digital devices during instructional hours is at the teacher’s discretion and direction for the purposes of promoting digital literacy. Instructional time includes classroom settings, assemblies, guest speakers, field trips and other events organized by school district staff.
The use of personal digital devices outside of instructional hours is not permitted on school grounds, during field trips, or other school activities. No photos, video, or audio recordings will be taken of students or staff without the individual’s consent.
The use of personal digital devices may support students with disabilities, diverse abilities, or medical needs as outlined in the student’s support plan and Individual Educaon Plan or other agreed-upon plans.
